Q & A

Can you please tell me why I would choose a 4 pitch vs. 2 pitch comb in a hackle set?

That’s the most asked question I get and it’s a really good one. So, There are a couple of things to consider when choosing which comb is best suited to the fiber you will process the most. Each pitch or row added to the comb will retain and remove vm and straighter the fiber at a faster rate because the debris gets caught in the back of the comb and that’s the part you discard.

If you have a longer staple length fiber such as Lincoln or Wenselydale you might appreciate having more tines and pitches on the 4-pitch comb to resist and straighten the fiber easier and faster.. Now if you are going to be working with alpaca, mohair and other shorter staple length fibers (probably cotton too) then a 2-pitch comb will work perfectly fine.

In short either one will do the job, but if you are doing a lot of processing with a wide variety of fibers the 4-pitch comb will make your life far easier and you will save time.
